At P1 Smart Repairs, we specialize in repairing Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) wheels to restore them to their original condition. Our comprehensive OEM wheel repair services ensure that your wheels not only look great but also perform safely and efficiently. Here’s a detailed look at our OEM wheel repair process:

  • The Pricing shown is the starting price per wheel. Machined (Diamond Cut) wheels, multi piece, aftermarket wheels, polished wheels are by quote. Expect an addition between $10-$30 per wheel
  • Remove and Installing the wheel from your vehicle is a separate service and not included in the price.

1. Initial Inspection

Check-In and Cleaning: Each wheel that arrives at our facility undergoes a thorough cleaning to remove any dirt and debris, allowing our technicians to conduct a precise inspection.

Detailed Assessment: We perform an initial inspection to identify any damage, including bends, cracks, curb rash, and other imperfections. This step includes checking the wheel’s balance and roundness.

2. Damage Documentation and Customer Approval

Visual and Digital Documentation: Any damage identified during the initial inspection is documented with detailed notes and photographs, which are uploaded to our Shop System for future reference

Customer Notification: We contact the customer to review the damage and provide a detailed explanation of the required repairs. Approval is obtained before any repair work begins.

3. Repair Process

Straightening: For wheels that are bent or out of round, our technicians use advanced hydraulic and mechanical straightening machines to carefully restore the wheel to its original shape.

Crack Repair: If cracks are detected, we evaluate whether the damage is repairable. Repairable cracks are meticulously welded and reinforced to ensure structural integrity. Non-repairable wheels are recommended for replacement.

Curb Rash and Cosmetic Damage: Curb rash, scratches, and other surface imperfections are carefully sanded and smoothed out. This step involves precision grinding and filling to restore the wheel’s surface.

Balancing: After the structural repairs are completed, the wheel is rebalanced to ensure it performs correctly when remounted on the vehicle.

4. Refinishing Process

Color Matching: Our refinishing team uses advanced color matching technology to match the original paint of the wheel. We apply high-quality paint and a protective clear coat to restore the wheel’s appearance to OEM standards.

Protective Coating: A durable clear coat is applied to protect the wheel from future damage and to give it a pristine, like-new finish.

5. Final Inspection and Quality Assurance

Thorough Inspection: After the repair and refinishing processes, each wheel undergoes a final inspection to ensure it meets our high standards of quality and safety.

Approval for Delivery: Once the wheel passes the final inspection, it is approved for delivery. The wheel is labeled with all pertinent information, including a QR code for easy tracking and identification.

6. Customer Notification and Delivery

Automated Notifications: Customers are notified via automated emails when their wheels are ready for delivery. Our drivers use the P1 Driver App to manage deliveries and ensure timely and accurate service.

Professional Delivery: Our trained drivers deliver the repaired wheels back to the customer, ensuring they are installed properly and meet customer satisfaction.

ASTM B117 (Salt Spray Test): This test evaluates the coating's resistance to corrosion that can be caused by exposure to salt (from road de-icing salt or sea spray), which is critical for wheels used in coastal areas or regions with snowy winters.

ASTM D2247 (Humidity Test): It assesses how well the coating can withstand prolonged exposure to high humidity without deteriorating. This is important for preventing rust and maintaining the integrity of the wheel's appearance.

ASTM D2794 (Impact Resistance Test): This test measures the coating's ability to resist cracking or chipping when impacted by hard objects. It simulates common damage scenarios, such as stones hitting the wheel surface while driving.

ASTM G154 (UV Exposure Test): It tests the coating's ability to maintain its color and gloss when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light over time. This ensures that the wheel's appearance will not degrade quickly when exposed to sunlight.

ASTM D3359 (Adhesion Test): This method evaluates the adhesion of the coating to the wheel's surface. Proper adhesion is crucial for the longevity of the coating and to prevent peeling and flaking.

ASTM G155 (Xenon Arc Test): Similar to ASTM G154 but uses a xenon arc light source to simulate the full spectrum of sunlight, including UV, visible light, and infrared (IR). This test provides a comprehensive assessment of how well the coating will hold up under prolonged exposure to sunlight.

ASTM D4060 (Abrasion Resistance Test): Assesses the coating's resistance to abrasion, such as wear from tire changes, cleaning, and the impact of road debris. This test helps ensure that the wheel coating remains intact and visually appealing even under rough conditions.

ASTM D2794 (Impact Test): The primary objective of this test is to test and provide a way to measure the strength and durability of a coating via impact on a specified and controlled weight and height. This test is intended to simulate real world conditions which the coating will be subjected to during use. 

ASTM D4752 and ASTM D1308 (Solvent, Chemical and Stain Resistance: The purpose of this test is to measure the coating’s resistance to solvents and chemicals the coatings might potentially be exposed to during use such as harsh cleaning chemicals, debris and other potential use cases. The ensures the coatings keeps the integrity of its color, shine and intended look.

The wheel is determined to be safe to be repaired during the check in process which is early on in the process of repair. When wheels have excessive damage such as chunks or large amounts of aluminum are removed from the wheel during the repair process, the wheel is filled with aluminum using a Tungsten Arc Welding process also known as TIG welding which is the cleanest and most controlled way to add aluminum to the wheel. 

The Wheel is moved to an isolated, environment controlled area of the facility equipped with a filtration system and curtained off by a fire rated heavy duty shop curtains to be filled with welded aluminum. 

A variety of techniques are implemented at P1 Smart Repairs to ensure the HAZ is kept to a minimum and the welds are strong. Location of the damage, type of alloy, and type of fill are all taken into account when TIG welding wheels.

  1. Structural Defects and Cracks: Each wheel is meticulously inspected for structural defects and cracks. If any visual signs of structural defects or compression stresses due to impact are detected, the wheel is immediately marked as not repairable and the account holder is notified.

  2. Wheel Straightening: Our technicians perform wheel straightening on wheels that do not exceed 2 inches in run-out deviation and must be able to straighten within 1/1000 of an inch of the center bore. This process ensures that the wheel maintains its proper balance and performance on the road.

  3. Repair Discretion: Each repair is done at the discretion of P1 Smart Repairs. We prioritize the safety and quality of our repairs over turnaround time, taking into account the nature of the wheel and industry standards. This means that repair work supersedes and indefinitely takes precedence over turnaround time.

  4. Documentation and Storage: Each wheel found to be bent is documented and stored at P1 Smart Repairs for up to 1 year. This documentation can be requested by insurance companies or servicing partners of P1 Smart Repairs, ensuring transparency and accountability in our repair process.

  5. On average, 1 out of 15 wheels are rejected by P1 Smart Repairs due to safety and structural concerns.
